The original inhabitants of Scotland were called Picts, a fierce Celtic people who were never conquered by the Romans. The Roman Emperor Hadrian built a wall – Hadrian`s Wall - across the north of England in an attempt to keep Picts in Scotland. In the sixth century, the country was settled by the Scotia, a tribe from Ireland and later by Britons from Wales.
Scotland and England remained separate and hostile countries until 1603, when James Stuart, the king of Scotland, became James I of England. Although both countries had the same monarch, they were still politically separate countries until 1707, when Scotland accepted rule by the British Parliament in Westminster.
